Books about horses are a staple in any equestrian’s home so I always get very excited when I am introduced to a new one. I also really enjoy when the story is not in your typical setting and is filled with heart. Enter Christa’s Luck by Jennifer and Michael Grais. This story is based on a real life event that is sure to capture your heart and have you rooting for Christa and the wild horses.
This book follows 13 year old cowgirl Christa Cassidy who lives on a ranch in Nevada and works to save a local herd of wild horses. The inspiration behind this story is a real life horse rescue event – horses being rescued from a flood – that occurred in the Netherlands. Authors Jennifer and Michael Grais then placed the story in the American West, an area where they live and are familiar with the plight of the American mustang. Christa is a well-rounded character and one that people of all ages could relate to. She has a strong love for horses and works to overcome some personal issues and teenage angst (ie not measuring up to her sister) which many teens will find very relatable. The plot twists along the way will keep you intrigued in the story and builds to a fantastic climax!
A female heroine who wears cowboy boots instead of glass slippers. A romance that’s compelling but rated G. A story that’s about grit more than polish, and a girl who has some serious growing to do, but who faces her worst fears because of her connection with a herd of wild horses. Christa’s Luck is a coming of age story that cherishes the wild spirit in girls as well as horses, and speaks to the shared vulnerability and power of both. — christasluck.com
My favorite thing about this book is that it shows you are never too young to take up a cause and advocate for it. Christa is 13 years old and yet she recognizes the need of The Lost Herd taking it upon herself to make a change. My hopes are that this book will inspire other teens to do similarly…become an advocate for a cause that they feel for. People of any age can make a difference if they are willing to try and put some time into it. Christa’s Luck is a wonderful, heartfelt story that many will enjoy and can learn something from. Be sure to pick up your copy and happy reading!
