VR recently launched its first giveaway in conjunction with equestrian clothier Equirex. One thing that makes Equirex really stand out is the attention to detail for the modern day equestrian. This line of clothing is designed and tested by fellow equestrian, Marjolein van Hilten. Not only is her line earth friendly (which I think is great!) but it is both stylish and functional. What could be better? VR recently caught up with Marjolein to learn more about her company. (If you haven’t signed up for the giveaway, be sure to do that here!)
VR: What inspired you to start Equirex?
Equirex: I started Equirex because on our historic farm we grow everything organic. We love to produce our own food. Our energy comes totally from the sun (we have a big solar installation) and in my daily life we try to be as good to the environment as we can. As a major horse enthusiast, I wanted to extend my daily life to my horsey life. I could not find the equestrian apparel I wanted, so I decided to create a brand that features earth-conscious equestrian apparel myself!
VR: Tell us about the current line.
Equirex: The current line exists of some exciting stylish and technical breeches, made in Europe out of Blue Sign fabrics, certified organic shirts made out of the softest quality cotton you can imagine, and relatively new for the equestrian fashion market, merino shirts and jackets.
VR: Do you have a particular customer in mind when you design?
Equirex: We compose the collection in close collaboration with a sportswear designer, the reference is a horse lover that cares about the environment and wants to wear comfortable yet stylish products. But first, I have to like it myself and then we test them for comfort and functionality. Style and comfort are combined into functional apparel!
VR: Can you tell us any of your plans for the future? Anything new and exciting for 2013?
Equirex: We are working hard on some new items, some more merino and some more organic cotton. We just got the first samples in for some men’s items. On the shows we did this summer, there were a lot of men complaining that there was nothing nice for them, so it was an easy choice to extend the collection with men’s items.
VR: What is your go-to piece in the Equirex line?
Equirex: That’s a difficult one, as all pieces are created with the utmost care. Our style 002 breeches clearly show how style, function and comfort can be combined, so in that sense I would choose that one, but the same applies to our style 001. So, difficult question!
VR: Do you currently own any horses? If so, what kind and what type of riding do you do?
Equirex: Yes, I own a Lusitano stallion and he has a little friend, a welsh pony. I ride dressage and enjoy taking clinics. This year has been so busy that I hardly had time for clinics, but the year before we did several clinics with Arthur Kottas Heldenberg and with David de Wispelaere. I hope to have the opportunity to ride some more next year. They both are very inspirational horse people.
VR: Is there anything else you would like us to know?
Equirex: Yes, we love to hear other people’s opinion on our products, so if you have any comments, requests of whatever, please feel free to drop us a line!
